Fort Gainesâs blacksmith demonstrating operations in the blacksmith shop. The blacksmith drill press and anvil are used for making horseshoes and other materials. Many restless spirits still walk these rooms.
There is a story about one of the fort keepers who would often spend the night in the bedroom above the gift shop. The story goes that the keeper awoke to a man standing at the foot of the bed. Although he couldnât see the apparition itself very well, he could see the brass buttons on what seemed to be a Civil Warâera coat. He also said that on another day, he looked out at the middle of the fort toward the powder magazines. The big doors in the middle section were opening and closing by themselves. The odd part about this is that the doors are very, very heavy, and no one has ever seen them open or close from just the wind.
The fortâs blacksmith, Mr. Ralph Oalmann, spoke of a personal experience where he had his bed in a particular location upstairs in the bedroom area above the gift shop. Sometimes when they perform in reenactments, he will sleep at the fort. He retold a story about a small gust of wind that would blow on the back of his ear several times while trying to sleep. Almost nightly, when he would sleep there, he would be woken up by this small gust of wind that only blew on his ear. He said he got so tired of it that he decided to move his bed, and it never happened again. He noted that there were some dark, creepy places in the fort that would make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. He added that he has heard many stories from visitors about purple lights, noises, voices and sounds of footsteps.
